Knowledge is Power: this also applies to dog cookies

The beauty of baking your own dog treats is that you know exactly what’s in them. Most store bought treats have preservatives to prolong shelf life, but yours will be fresher and healthier for your dog. You can also choose to include higher quality ingredients, so you know that your dog eats only delicious and nutritious snacks. There are no fillers or byproducts in these wholesome treats! You might even be tempted to taste test them yourself.

Customize these dog biscuits to your dog’s diet & tastes

Remember to introduce any new foods slowly and if you have any concerns, first check with your vet. If your dog has any sensitivities, dietary restrictions, or allergies, there are suggestions to adjust the recipe according to your dog’s needs. Feel free to experiment by replacing the same quantities of wet or dry ingredients with foods that you know are good for your dog, and that you know your dog will absolutely love. For example, you can use all-purpose flour, or substitute with whole wheat flour, coconut flour, buckwheat flour, or oats. If you don’t have broth, you can simply use water. Also you can try making a few batches of these dog cookies with different ingredients in each to give your dog a variety of flavourful treats.

Quick & Easy Homemade Dog Biscuits

  • 1/2 cup of beef, chicken or bacon broth
  • 2 ½ cups flour
  • 1 egg
  • Add 2 tablespoons of  any of the following to add a custom flavour / texture to your dog biscuits: Bacon bits, liver, wheat germ, ground flaxseed, shredded cheese, sweet potato, carrot, peanut butter… or any healthy ingredient your dog especially loves.

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177º C)
  • Put all ingredients into a bowl
  • Mix, then knead dough until it forms a ball (about 3 minutes)
  • Roll dough to ½ inch thick
  • Cut into squares, slices, or use a bone shaped cookie cutter
  • Grease a cookie sheet (or use parchment paper) & put dough pieces onto it
  • Bake for 30 minutes, then allow to cool before serving
  • Bone Appetit!

You can store these dog cookies in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 6 months. The dough will cover a 10 x 12 inch baking sheet. The final number of cookies will depend on the size of the shapes or cookie cutter you use.

Use these Dog Biscuits to promote Pawesomeness

Homemade dog treats are a great way to reward your dog for good deeds and to encourage them to learn even more positive behaviours. Don’t dole out the cookies for just looking cute or begging. Engage your dog in games that also teach them the kind of things you’d like them to do more of. Start by practicing basic skills such as sit, stay, come, down, leave-it. Try engaging your dog in a fun game of hide and seek! Get your dog to sit-stay, hide their cookie, then show them how to go find where you just hid their cookie. First make it easy to find the cookie and then gradually advance to hiding the cookie in more challenging spots.

Enjoy these Dog Cookies in Moderation

Everyone loves cookies, however, more than half of the dogs in North America are obese! This is a serious health concern that can reduce the lifespan of your beloved pet. The average dogs’ lifespan is already too short, so don’t overfeed with yummy treats or with your dog’s regular food! On the other hand, you don’t want to underfeed either. Give your dog an appropriate amount of food for their size, age and energy expenditure. Keep an eye on your dog’s weight and gradually adjust the quantities of food you give them, if needed. For example, if the healthy, homemade treats you give your dog make up 10% of the calories in their diet, then reduce their regular food by 10% to ensure you are not overfeeding your dog.

Have a great time baking & rewarding your lucky dog with these delicious and nutritious homemade dog biscuits! These doggy biscuits are also excellent Howl-o-ween treats.
